Cardinals Claim Mountain East Conference Men's Cross Country Title

PIPESTEM, W.Va.
-- Wheeling Jesuit placed its five scoring runners in the top 15 on its way to the 2013 Mountain East Conference men's cross country championship on Saturday at Pipestem State Park.

The Cardinals finished with 27 points. West Virginia Wesleyan took second with 46 points, followed by Concord with 92 points. Notre Dame College was fourth (105), followed by UVa-Wise (119), West Liberty (120), Fairmont State (216), Urbana (231) and Glenville State (268).

WJU went 1-2-3 individually led by MEC Runner of the Year Luke Holubeck who won the race in a record-setting time of 25:55. He was followed by teammates Patrick Stanton in second and Joe Molek in third.

Notre Dame College's Sal Caroniti took fourth, followed by MEC Freshman of the Year Wes Stowers from West Virginia Wesleyan. WJU's Patrick Riffle was sixth, UVa-Wise's Shaquon Wilkins was seventh, and WVWC's Brody Born and Nathan Whitacre finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Concord's Jordan Weitzel rounded out the top 10.

WJU coach Ricky Moore was named Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year following his team's victory.

The men's cross country teams will now compete at the Atlantic Regionals in two weeks.
