PIPESTEM, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan placed six runners in the top 10 to run away with the 2013 Mountain East Conference women's cross country championship.
WVWC netted a team total of just 20 points to claim the title. Wheeling Jesuit was runner-up with 55 points, followed by West Liberty (92), Charleston (103) and Fairmon State (145). Notre Dame College finished sixth with a score of 155, Concord was seventh with 192, edging UVa-Wise's total of 193. Glenville was ninth with 278 points followed by West Virginia State in 10th with 293 points.
The Bobcats were led by Freshman of the Year and Runner of the Year Naomi Underwood who won the race with a time of 24:14. She was followed by teammates Erica Walker in second, Loren McDaniel in third, Rachael Hulett in sixth, Emma Harrison in eighth and Brianna Waybright in 10th. The only runners not from WVWC to crack the top 10 were Jess Zimak (fourth) and Jen McFarland (fifth) from Wheeling Jesuit, and Charleston's Kourtney Willey in seventh.
Veteran coach Jesse Skiles was named the MEC Coach of the Year following his team's victory.
The teams from the Mountain East Conference will compete at the regional meet in two weeks.
