BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Lexy Carson of West Virginia State has been named Mountain East Conference Player of the Year, Cara Mason of Shepherd the Freshman of the Year and Adam Collins of Charleston the Coach of the Year.
Carson, a senior guard from Decatur, Ill., led the MEC in scoring with 21.1 points per game while helping the Yellow Jackets to an 18-10 record. In addition to her scoring touch, she also ranked fifth in the league in assists (4.29 apg) and fifth in steals (2.21 spg).
Mason, a redshirt freshman from Monrovia, Md., made 23 starts and averaged 11.2 points per game for the Rams. She led Shepherd in both assists (2.1) and steals (1.4) per game.
In his second season at UC, Collins led the Golden Eagles to a 19-7 overall record and a 15-7 mark in conference play. Charleston led the league in scoring defense surrendering 64.4 points per game in one of the highest-scoring conferences in NCAA Division II.
In addition to the individual awards, the MEC announced the 2013-14 all-conference teams. The first team consists of eight players from eight different teams. The second team also has eight players from eight different teams. In all, 11 of the 12 teams in the league are represented on the all-conference teams.
Glenville State and West Liberty each had three players honored, while Charleston, Fairmont State, Urbana and West Virginia State placed two players apiece on the team.
The All-MEC teams and individual award winners are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
