BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Charleston's Matt Sherba is the Mountain East Conference Player of the Year, Andrew Ponder is the Freshman of the Year, and West Virginia Wesleyan's Marc Walters is the Coach of the Year, the league announced today.
Sherba, a senior from Oxford, Ohio, was unbeaten in MEC play on the year going 4-0 in the No. 1 spot and 3-0 at No. 2. He was also 5-0 in doubles play. On the year, Sherba was 12-5 in singles and 12-3 in doubles.
Ponder, a freshman from Lincoln, England, posted a 9-9 overall record at No. 1 singles for the Hilltoppers. He was 3-4 in conference play, with three of those losses coming in tiebreakers. He also went 10-8 in doubles, including 4-3 against MEC competition.
In his second season at West Virginia Wesleyan, Walters led his team to a runner-up finish in the Mountain East Conference with three freshmen in his starting lineup. The Bobcats were a combined 29-13 in all singles and doubles matches throughout the 2013-14 season.
MEC regular season champion Charleston had two representatives on the All-MEC first team in Sherba and James Gammell. West Virginia Wesleyan, which finished runner-up in the regular season standings, had two first team selections in Aitor Reparaz and Joel Izquierdo. Vlad Akimenko (UVa-Wise), Diogo Montiero (Concord), Andrew Ponder (West Liberty) and Chris Pratt (Shepherd) complete the All-MEC first team.
The second team consists of Rob Camplin (Concord), Pablo Cimorra (West Liberty), Grant Davis (Shepherd), Steven Kolumban (Shepherd), Michael Lesko (Shepherd), Jake Lorenz (Charleston), Dennis Okoth (Charleston), and Jacobo Rendon (West Virginia Wesleyan).
The All-MEC teams and honors are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
