Lock Haven Defeats Lindenwood 10-9 in Women's Lacrosse Semifinal

Lock Haven surrendered an 8-4 second half lead, but Kelly Hamilton’s third goal of the day in overtime proved to be the game-winner as the Eagles defeated Lindenwood, 10-9, in the NCAA Semifinals at Kerr Stadium in Salem, Va.

Rachel Ward had four goals to lead all scorers, and Chelsea Borrino directed the offense with a game-high four assists to lead Lock Haven (18-2) into the championship game. Hamilton finished with three and Jessica Pandolf contributed two.

The Lions (15-3) used a balance offense getting two goals from Melissa Smith, Jordyn Constance, Melissa Menchella and Amanda Schimpke. Lindenwood won 13 of the 22 draw controls in the game, but were plagued by 15 turnovers.

Lindenwood scored the first goal of the game as on an unassisted goal from Menchella, but Lock Haven rattled off six of the next seven goals to build a 6-2 lead. Lindenwood got some momentum going into the half, though, as Menchella scored on a free position shot with just two seconds left in the half.

Lock Haven appeared to be in control of the game pushing its lead to 8-4 with 20 minutes left, but Lindenwood found its offensive rhythm and continued to win draw controls to string together five unanswered goals over the next 14 minutes to take a 9-8 lead.

The Lions had the ball late, but a turnover gave Lock Haven a possession with under two minutes left. The Eagles capitalized with Ward’s fourth goal of the game on a feed from Borrino to send the game in overtime.

Neither team was able to get a goal in the first three-minute overtime session, and then Hamilton put in the go-ahead score with 1:49 left. The Lions appeared to have one last chance with under 20 seconds left, but a foul and offsides call led to a toss that Lock Haven controlled to secure the victory.
