CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fourth-seeded Concord edged Shepherd, 5-4, and Charleston downed Fairmont State, 5-0, on Friday in the MEC Tournament Quarterfinals.
The Mountain Lions advance to take on top-seeded West Liberty tomorrow at 11 a.m., while the Golden Eagles will take on second-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. at Schoenbaum Tennis Courts.
Concord's win over fifth-seeded Shepherd came down to the final singles match of the day. CU led after doubles, 2-1, but Shepherd rallied to win at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles. That set up the pivotal match at No. 6 singles, and Concord's Bill Wright won in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to secure the team win.
Charleston won close matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and also won at No. 3 to go out in front of the Falcons 3-0. UC's Alec Foote lost just one game in a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles, and Nick Bakos didn't drop a game at No. 5 singles to clinch a 5-0 win for the Golden Eagles.
