Shepherd Knocks Off WVWC To Win Women's Lax Tournament Title

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Junior midfielder Erin Phelan scored four goals and added two assists and junior attacker Hunter Morris added four goals and an assists to lead Shepherd University to a 20-3 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the MEC Women's Lacrosse Tournament championship at Ram Stadium on Sunday.

Phelan gained Tournament MVP honors as she added three draw controls, two ground balls, and a caused turnover.

Sophomore midfielder Haley Price had three goals and an assist and senior attacker/midfielder Kelsey Eagan tallied three goals.

Sophomore attacker Brooke Hunley and freshman midfielder Courtney Matthews each had a pair of goals.

Junior midfielder Theresa Lang had a goal, while sophomore attacker Kiana Miller recorded an assist.

Jessica Hardman, Natalie Schaffner, and Katie Kennedy each scored of goals for the Bobcats.

The Rams held a 12-2 lead at halftime.

Junior Savannah Shores (5) and freshman Casey Hickman (1) combined for six saves in goal for the Rams. Lexi Swisher had 12 saves for the Bobcats.

Shepherd had a 40-11 advantage in shots and a 25-13 edge in ground balls. The Rams also had a 15-10 advantage in draw controls.

Shepherd improves to 12-5, while West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 13-5.

Notes: Shepherd won the inaugural Mountain East Conference Tournament… Shepherd's 12 wins this season set a new season mark… Alyx Albano had six caused turnovers, two ground balls, and a draw control.
