BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Notre Dame's Leonardo Paiva, along with Urbana's Nathan Jones, Raphael Northoff and Nick Roberts have earned top honors from the Mountain East Conference as the league announced its annual awards and all-conference teams.
Paiva, a junior from Brazil, is the league's Offensive Player of the Year after leading the nation in goals this season with 25. He scored a goal in every Notre Dame game this year, including four hat tricks and another multi-goal game. Six of his goals have been game-winners this year, which ranks him seventh in the country.
Jones, a senior from Flintshire, Wales, is the MEC Defensive Player of the Year. Jones helped the Blue Knights record seven shutouts this season and became the school's all-time leader in that category in the process. Jones posted a goals-against average of 0.55 and his save percentage of .862 is the best in the country.
Northoff, a native of Ahlen, Germany, was tabbed as the MEC Freshman of the Year after leading Urbana in scoring with eight goals and five assists. His 21 points on the year led all MEC freshman and ranked ninth-best in the NCAA.
Roberts was named MEC Coach of the Year after leading the Blue Knights to a runner-up finish in the MEC. Urbana went 12-3-1 and spent a majority of the year in the national rankings, and achieved its highest-ever ranking at 12th earlier this season. Roberts also has Urbana regionally ranked putting the Blue Knights in position for a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
In addition to the individual honors, the league also announced the All-MEC teams. Regular season champion Charleston had five first team selections, while runner-up Urbana had four. Notre Dame had two first team honorees, and Wheeling Jesuit and West Virginia Wesleyan each had one.
The All-MEC teams are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
