Top Seeds Escape In MEC Women's Soccer Semifinals

Top-seeded Notre Dame rallied from two goals down in the second half to force overtime before eventually moving on in penalty kicks, and Charleston got a game-winner in overtime to advance to the MEC Women's Soccer Tournament championship game on Sunday.

West Liberty grabbed a 2-0 lead against Notre Dame after Kaelyn Oskin scored in the 15th minute and Emily Evans curled in a shot from 20 yards in the 34th minute to put the Hilltoppers up. WLU absorbed pressure in the second half, but Notre Dame finally broke through as Katarina Doncevic took a feed from Alexis Manoa in the 77th minute. The Falcons continued to press and got the equalizer after Maranda Melton handled a chip pass from Manoa and scored with less than five minutes left in regulation. West Liberty regrouped and had solid scoring opportunities in overtime, but the game ended in a 2-2 draw and headed to penalty kicks.

West Liberty missed its first attempt as Sam Shoemaker made the save, and Notre Dame remained ahead throughout the shootout. Melton buried the PK to allow the Falcons to advance to the finals. 

In the other semifinal, UC scored in the first minute of overtime to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0. The Golden Eagles earned a corner kick that was taken by Ivey Nucilli that was knocked in by Marlee Coleman for her first goal of the season.

UC outshot the Bobcats 11-4 on the day. Charleston goalkeeper Zoe Zyta recorded two saves and Wesleyan goalkeeper Chelsea Hubner made four saves.
