BECKLEY, W.Va. -- West Liberty, Shepherd and West Virginia State all claimed victories on the second day of the Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament at Epling Stadium.
West Liberty held off a late Concord rally to take an 8-7 win and eliminate Concord in the first game of the day. Shepherd downed Glenville State, 8-1, to eliminate the Pioneers. In the final game of the day, West Virginia State edged Notre Dame, 3-2.
West Virginia State and Shepherd will play in the winner's bracket tomorrow at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to the championship game on Sunday. West Liberty and Notre Dame will meet in an elimination game at 3 p.m. The loser of Shepherd/West Virginia State and the winner of West Liberty/Notre Dame will play at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to the championship.
Game Four: West Liberty 8, Concord 7 | Final Stats
A seven-run sixth inning propelled West Liberty to an 8-7 win in an elimination game against Concord.
The Hilltoppers rode a strong pitching performance from Mark Smyth who pitched all nine innings giving up 16 hits, seven runs (four earned) with four strikeouts and four walks. Smyth (9-3) tossed 171 pitches in the victory.
Michael Adams went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Ethan Estes had three hits and scored twice for the Hilltoppers.
Chris Kelly (7-6) took the loss giving up eight runs on eight hits, but surrendered just one earned run. In the pivotal sixth inning the Mountain Lions committed a pair of costly errors that led to all seven runs in the inning being unearned. Andrew Seigel and Paul Williams each had three hits for CU.
Game Five: Shepherd 8, Glenville State 1 | Final Stats
A.J. Stead pitched a five-hit complete game to eliminate Glenville State in an 8-1 win for the Rams.
Stead (7-1) scattered five hits in the nine innings and allowed just one run on the day. He struck out seven and walked two.
Daniel Heleine did the damage offensively for SU going 4-for-5 with four RBI. Mike Brown added two hits and Chase Hoffman drove in a pair.
Logan Henderson went 2-for-4 and drove in GSC's only run on the day. Chris Longdo got the start for the Pioneers and pitched seven innings giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits in a losing effort.
Game Six: West Virginia State 3, Notre Dame 2 | Final Stats
Jamison Jones' RBI single through the left side of the infield in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted West Virginia State to a 3-2 win over Notre Dame.
Jones and Trayvis Patterson each finished with three hits and one RBI. Trenton Porter went 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Yellow Jackets.
Josh Falbo (9-2) earned the win going 7.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Curtis Johnson came on in the eighth and worked out of a jam, and then pitched a clean eighth to earn his eighth save of the season.
Danny Beaver went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Austin Barnhart also had an RBI for NDC. Jake Welch (7-5) pitched a complete game scattering 12 hits through nine inning of work and giving up three runs.
