Benner Named MEC Women's Sports Coach Of The Year

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Wheeling Jesuit's Christy Benner has been named the Mountain East Conference Women's Sports Coach of the Year for 2015-16.

Benner directed the Cardinals to a historic season that saw Wheeling Jesuit capture the first NCAA championship in school and league history. WJU went 39-4 and won its third-straight MEC title and fifth-consecutive NCAA Atlantic Region championship last fall. From there, the Cardinals defeated Arkansas Fort-Smith and Western Washington to advance to the NCAA finals. Wheeling Jesuit then claimed the NCAA title with a 3-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic.

Benner joins Shepherd football coach Monte Cater as MEC Coach of the Year recipients. The MEC Women's Sports Coach of the Year is selected by a vote of institutional administrators and the conference office.
