HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan and West Liberty avoided upsets on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the MEC Tournament at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
The fourth-seeded Bobcats downed No. 5 Fairmont State 5-1, while third-seeded West Liberty swept past No. 6 UVa-Wise 5-0. WVWC will now take on top-seeded West Virginia State tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. The Hilltoppers get second-seeded Charleston at 2 p.m.
The Fighting Falcons duo of Trinite' Klamadji and Heloisa Adams won at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. However FSU was unable to keep the momentum going in the other two doubles matches. WVWC won at No. 2 by a score of 8-6, and rolled at No. 3 doubles, 8-2 to take a 2-1 lead.
The lower half of WVWC's lineup controlled singles and picked up the necesary wins to give the team the victory. Cecilia Martinez Oliver won at No. 4, Julia Yanes won at No. 5 and Estel Fernandez won at No. 6 to clinch the match.
West Liberty rolled in doubles to go ahead 3-0 against UVa-Wise. Thais Mendez won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, and Kate Pinchuk won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to close out the match.
