Day 1: MEC Track & Field Championships

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Rain wreaked havoc at the Mountain East Conference Track & Field Championships, but nine events were completed on the first day.

On the women's side, West Virginia Wesleyan grabbed the early lead through five events after a pair of strong performance from Lauren Cvechko, who won both the long jump and the high jump. The Bobcats also had a strong performance in the javelin taking the top six spots in the event to earn points. 

Wheeling Jesuit is in second with 55.5 points. The Cardinals dominated the hammer throw racking up 36 points in the event, led by Haley Campbell who won with a mark of 50.58 meters. Kaitlyn Workman also successfully defended her title in the 10,000 meters winning the race with a time of 39:08.

The men were only able to complete four events as rain halted the completion of the pole vault. WVWC holds the lead with 55 points, followed by Charleston with 33. Notre Dame is in third with 23.

Concord's Justin Snyder won the 10,000 meters after watching several other runners trade the lead for 23 laps. Snyder then put himself within striking distance on the final lap and passed three runners on his way to the title with a time of 32:05. Notre Dame's Brandon Gambrell won the long jump with a leap of 7.17 meters, just .01 ahead of Jonathan Gore. 

UC's Aaron Elliott won the hammer with a throw of 48.21, and Wesleyan's Alan Crise won the javelin with a throw of 48.74 meters.
